Application Update

The Virtual Appliance has two parts that can be upgraded or updated, the host build and the application build. The steps below cover two methods of updating the Virtual Appliance application build. For steps to upgrade the host build, reference Host Upgrade.

Please refer to the Application & Host Compatibility Information table below prior to upgrading the appliance to be sure the host build you are running is supported.

Application & Host Compatibility Information (VMDK/VHD/OVA)

  • Customers on host build 1.0.756 or older, please contact our support team to upgrade to the latest version.
  • Customers on host build 1.0.757 must do an incremental upgrade to 22.0.913 before upgrading to the latest version.
  • Customers on host build 22.0.818 and newer can upgrade right to the latest version.

Backup the Virtual Appliance

Before upgrading the Virtual Appliance, it is crucial to back up the database. Failure to do so can result in irreversible data loss. For more information on comprehensive backup guidelines, reference Database Backup Recommendations.

Application Update Instructions

Automatic Update

The automatic update downloads the package from our online update service over TCP 443. If there is no response when using the Update Now button, verify the Virtual Appliance's DNS requirements (and SSL requirements, if applicable) are in place.

  1. In the Virtual Appliance Admin Console, go to Support & Training then About PrinterLogic.
  2. Use the Application & Host Compatibility Information table above to verify your current Host build is compatible with the available Application build.
  3. If compatible, select the Update Now button.

Requirements

DNS Requirements:

SSL Certificate Requirements:

  • The SubjectAlternativeName extension must list the two DNS entries above. For example, printerlogic.mycompany.com and *.printerlogic.mycompany.com. Reference the Virtual Appliance SSL Certificates topic for more information.

Manual Update

  1. Download the .gpg appliance update file. Reference Release Notes 2024 to download application .gpg files.
  2. Connect to the Virtual Appliance share drive.
  3. Open the .updates folder.

If the .updates fold does not exist, create one.

  4. Place the downloaded .gpg file in folder.
  5. Right-click in the .updates folder.
  6. Select New then Text Document.
    1. Name that document .update.txt.
  7. Edit the .update.txt file.
    1. Type in the version number you are updating to; it will match the beginning portion of the .gpg file (example: 20.0.1305).
  8. Select File then Save As.
    1. Change the Save as type to All Files.
    2. Name the file .update.ready
    3. Verify the file Type column for the file (.update.ready) shows as READY File.
  9. Rename the file to .update
    1. Verify the file Type column for the file (.update) shows as UPDATE File.

You can ignore the LOCK File.

  10. Once the file is saved as an UPDATE File, the Virtual Appliance will start to update automatically using the .gpg file. To confirm the update progress, open the virtual machine web console for the Virtual Appliance and you will see STATUS: updating. Once the update is complete, you will see STATUS: running.

Verify the Update

  1. Verify the update was successful by logging into the admin console.
  2. Navigate to Support & Training then About PrinterLogic to verify the Appliance Version number matches the version you just updated to.
  3. Remove the .gpg file from the .updates folder once the update is confirmed complete.
