Windows Print Server Links

If your printing environment requires print servers to work alongside other software, you can use Windows Print Server Links. This feature is for administrators whose environment may require them to continue to use print servers but still want to benefit from Vasion Print (formerly PrinterLogic)'s self-install and printer deployment capabilities. You can add shared printers as printer objects manageable from the Admin Console.

With Vasion Print (formerly PrinterLogic), you can use a standard TCP / IP port that will be RAW (default port 9100) or LPR (non-standard). Use Windows Print Server Links if you are using particular software that requires the print queues on the print server to use a non-standard port.

Before setting up Windows Print Server Links, add the printers and configure any other software needed on the print server. Then, in the Admin Console on Tools then Windows Print Server Links, create the link(s) to the print server and add them to the tree structure. Configure deployments to push printers on the server to endpoints. Print jobs are sent from the workstation to the print server, which spools the job before sending it to the printer to be printed.

Vasion Print (formerly PrinterLogic) does not manage user access to the print server or its printers. Manage that outside of the application since end users could log into and install printers from the print server. Configure Portal Security settings in the Admin Console to restrict who can see and install a printer from the Self-service Portal.

In Windows Print Server Links you can take the following three actions:

  • Add — add new print server links to the tab.
  • Edit — change existing line items. The print server name cannot be edited, but the folder containing the printers can.
  • Delete — remove existing line items.

Column Details

  • Print Server Name — displays the print server that you selected. The printers on the server appear as printer objects in the tree structure folder you select in the List Printers In field.
  • Last Synchronization — the last time the print server with the client installed reported changes / synced.
  • Total Printers — total number of printers the client found on the print server.

You may see a difference between Total Printers and Listed Printers because Listed Printers does not show printers that are not shared.

  • Shared Printers — total number of shared printers.
  • Listed Printers — the number of printers appearing in the selected tree structure folder.
  • Errors — any error notifications about the Windows Print Server Links.
  • List Printers In — shows the path to the folder in the Admin Console tree that displays the Windows Print Server Links printers.
