Printer Conversion

After importing printers from a Microsoft print server into the Admin Console with the Printer Import tool, use the Client to convert your end user’s Microsoft shared printers to Vasion Print (formerly PrinterLogic)-managed TCP / IP printers.

The Microsoft Printer Conversions settings are located in the Client settings under the Tools menu option.

Conversion Settings

Enable PrinterLogic Client to Convert Microsoft Printers to TCP / IP printers
Enable this option to convert an existing workstation printer into a TCP / IP printer managed by Vasion Print (formerly PrinterLogic). When enabled, the Client on the workstation converts the printers to match the imported printer object in the Admin Console. The Client will only update the printers with a matching object in the Admin Console.
Enable Microsoft conversion item-level targeting
With item-level targeting, you define which devices, users, and IP address ranges target for conversion. Item-level targeting helps roll out the conversion by testing sites or users before pushing the changes to the rest of the environment. You can use targeting to deploy the Client first, and then convert the printers at a later date.
Microsoft conversion filter options
Change default printer after converting existing default printer
When converting printers, if the printer was marked as the default printer, mark the new Vasion-managed TCP / IP printer as the default printer in the Admin Console.
Delete the user's original Microsoft printer after successful conversion
Enable this option to instruct the Client to delete the original printer once it has successfully created the new TCP / IP printer.

Printers Not Converting

If the server where the printers were imported from uses an alias, this can impact printer conversions. Here are the steps to verify the server name and add a new server name association.

Create Server Name Association

  1. On the end station, verify the server name that is attached to those printers. In this example the server name shows as prntsrver.

  2. In the Admin Console, navigate to Tools then Import / Export then Data Manager.
  3. In the Data Manager modal, select the following:
    1. Under Action:, select Export.
    2. Under Format:, select CSV.
    3. In Select Data Type: select Print Server Import/Migration Links.
    4. Select Go.
  4. Check the Print Server-DNS Name and Print Server-NetBios Name columns.

  5. Adjust the columns to match the server name showing on the end station.
  6. Navigate back to Tools then Import / Export then Data Manager.
  7. In the Data Manager modal select the following:
    1. Under Action:, select Insert.
    2. Under Format:, select CSV.
    3. In Select Data Type: select Print Server Import/Migration Links
    4. Select Go.
  8. Upload the CSV file with the updated data.

With the correct server name association, the printers will start converting during the next Client check-in. You can manually update a workstation by selecting Refresh Configurations from the system tray Client menu.
