Using the PrinterLogic Chrome OS Client Extension
The PrinterLogic Chrome OS Client extension enables your Chrome OS workstation to communicate with your instance of PrinterLogic . The client installed on your Chrome OS Device communicates with PrinterLogic on a regular basis. If your administrator has made changes to printers deployed to your device, then the client will be able to apply those changes automatically.
When the client extension is installed on your Chrome OS device, you will see the PrinterLogic Client extension displayed.
Some of these tasks you may have available are as follows:
The Add Printer option opens the Self-service Portal, shown below, which is a browser-based tool that enables you to easily install printers on your computer.
When a printer is selected, whether it be from the floor plan map or the list of printers below the map, you will be asked if you would like to install the selected printer.
Clicking on Install Printer will ask you to confirm that you would like to begin the installation.
Clicking on Yes will begin the installation and then notify you when the installation was successful.
The Secure Print Settings option opens a screen that will show you the installed printers that are enabled for secure printing.
You are given the ability to determine what options you would like to be displayed when you print to a specific printer. These are selected by clicking on the drop-down arrow.
The following are definitions of each option that may be displayed:
This option will cause the print job to always be held. With this option, no prompts will be given to the end-user, the job will simply be held until released at the printer.
This option will cause the print job to automatically be released at the printer. The job will not be held, and printing will begin immediately.
This option will provide the end-user with a prompt on their computer when they start a print job. The prompt will generally show at the bottom of the screen, and will give an option to them to either hold the print job until they release it at the printer (HOLD), or to release it immediately (RELEASE).
With the Manage Printers option, you will find a list of the printers that are available to you. This list will contain both printers that you have installed from the Self-service Portal as well as printers that have been deployed to you by your system administrator.
When Manage Printers is clicked you will find your printers listed. The columns will display the printer name, it's URL or IP address, and it's status.
There are two additional symbols that may also be seen. The first is a magnifying glass, which can be clicked to send a query to a printer that shows a status of Offline, Searching, or Not Found. Doing this will trigger the PrinterLogic Client extension to check in with the printer to determine its current status. The second symbol is that of an "X," which allows you to manually delete the printer from your list of available printers. This option is only available if it is a printer that was added by you using the Self-service Portal.
The following are definitions of possible printer status codes that may be displayed:
This indicates that the printer has been added, was able to be contacted, the printer attributes were found, and it is ready to print. If a printer is not in a Ready state then you will not be able to print until it becomes ready.
This means that the Client extension has received the printer details from the PrinterLogic server and is ready to start the searching process for that printer.
This means that the Client extension is trying to contact the printer by querying it. When the Client gets a response, the printer status will be changed to READY. If a response is not received, the printer status will change to NOT FOUND.
This means that the printer is busy (probably printing another job). You can still send print jobs to a printer in a busy status. When available, the printer will queue the print job and eventually print it.
This means that at some point the printer was in a READY status but when the printer was later queried there was no response. The Client extension will keep trying every 20 seconds, so when the printer goes back online, it will get a response, and change the status to READY.
This means that when the printer was added, the client extension did a search for the printer but got no response. This could be that the printer was offline when the search was done. Another reason for this could also be that Printing Protocol (IPP) is not enabled on the printer or is not supported.
This means that this printer is running low on supplies like paper or ink.
This means that this printer requires attention. Possible causes could be a paper jam or incorrect paper size.
The Print Queue option will show your active print jobs.
By clicking on the Print Queue option you will find your print jobs listed. The columns will display the Title of the printed item, the printer name, when the print job was created, and the print job status.
The following are definitions of possible Print Queue status codes that may be displayed:
This indicates that the print job is being converted to a format the printer understands, and is being sent to the printer.
This indicates that the print job has been received by the printer and the print job is being processed to be printed.
This indicates that the print job has been opted to be held for secure release. A secure print job will stay in this state until it is released at the printer, at which point it will be changed to a status of Printing.
This indicates that the print job is actively printing at the selected printer.
If the PRINTING status is displayed longer than normal, there is a possibility that there may be a problem at the printer, such as being out of paper, missing paper tray, or other condition that would prohibit the document from printing.
The Release Portal option will open a portal that will show your active print jobs that are currently being held.
By clicking on the Release Portal option you will find your held print jobs listed. If you have submit print jobs to multiple printers, the jobs will be categorized by the printer name. Each print job will display a number of columns showing the title of the print job, how many pages, the status, the job type, when the print job was submitted, and the print job size.
To release a print job, one or more jobs can be selected using the check box and the clicking on Release. Print jobs can also be deleted from the portal as well if no longer needed.
The Refresh Configurations Icon will re-establish the connection with the printers that are installed, and get the most up to date status of the printer.
For example, let's suppose your administrator sets up a new printer deployment to be installed on your Chromebook. If you don't want to wait for the client extension to automatically check-in, you can click the Refresh Configurations Icon, and the client will immediately check-in and see that there is a new deployment ready. As a result, the new printer will be installed immediately, and you can begin using it right away.
