Printer Deployment
Printer deployment is the feature that automatically installs printers and drivers on workstations.
Overview
Configure deployment associations on each printer object's Deploy tab in the Admin Console. Endpoints with the client installed will automatically install or update the printer and drivers when the association criteria are satisfied.
For example, deployments based on Active Directory or LDAP users are deployed to the endpoint when the user logs in and the client verifies their information. Their printers are installed and available without self-installing from the Self-service Portal.
Printers without drivers attached will not deploy. Current deployment options are:
- Active Directory Users, Groups, Objects
- IdP Users and Groups
- IP Address Range
- Hostname
- MAC Address
- Chromebook Serial Number or Asset ID
- Advanced Groups
- User
- Computer
- Group (user membership)
- Indirect user group (group is member from assigned group)
- Container user
- Container computer
- Child-container user
- Child-container computer
- IP address range (smaller range)
- IP address range (larger range)
Set up Deployments
- In the Admin Console, navigate to the printer object's Deploy tab.
- Click Add in the upper right.
- Select the deployment association.
- Select User, Computer, or Group or Container, or OU.
- Verify the Object Types and Locations are correct.
-
Enter the object name(s) in the box.
- Click Check Names.
- Click Add.
Deploy as Shared Printers
- Create an IP Address Range object if one is not already created.
- In the tree view, click New in the upper left.
- Select IP Address Range.
Name, and fill in the IP Address Range fields.
- Click Add. The IP Address Range object shows in the tree view.
- There are three methods to create an IP Address Range deployment.
- One method from the printer object's Deploy tab.
- Two methods from the IP Address Range object' Deploy tab.
- Using the Add Printer button.
- This method adds individual printers to the deployment.
- Using the Automatic Deployments drop-down.
- This method allows you to mass deploy printers in the folder, or include subfolders, to devices in that IP Range.
If using Offline Secure Release Printing, there is an additional field on the IP Address Range objects General tab that should be set. This information is found here on the Set Service Client on IP Address Range subsection of Offline Secure Release Printing .
Chromebook Asset ID
- Select Chromebook Asset ID.
-
Fill in the Asset ID(s).
Use commas, new lines, or both to separate multiple IDs.
- Click Add.
- Click Save.
Chromebook Serial Number
- Select Advanced Groups.
- Advanced Groups need to be created before they can be added.
- See Advanced Groups for more information on creating groups.
-
Select the group from the list.
- Click Add.
- Click Save.
This is for environments where users print to shared Equitrac / HPAC shared printers.
Prerequisites:
- Create the Equitrac / HPAC printer on the print server as usual (when setting up Equitrac / HPAC printing) and then share it.
- Create a matching TCP/IP printer object in the Admin Console and configure the Port Protocol to LPR. Port Protocol is on the printer object's Port tab.
By creating a TCP/IP LPR printer in Admin Console and deploying it, you can now use PrinterLogic to deploy and manage all of the printers on your end users' workstations, including the Equitrac / HPAC printer. if you replace the Equitrac / HPAC print server with a differently named print server, simply update the Equitrac / HPAC printer port information to have the printer send print jobs to the new server.
You can deploy the printer using all of the normal deployment options (Active Directory user, group, OU, IP address, hostname, etc.).
Steps to Deploy:
- If it is not already installed, add the LPD role service to the print server.
- In Server Manager, select the Roles section.
- Under the Print and Document Services role, click Add Role Services.
- Select the LPD Service box and click Next.
- Click Install.
- Create and share the Equitrac printer on the print server.
- Log in to the Admin Console.
- In the tree view, right click the folder that will house the new printer.
- Click New TCP/IP Printer.
- Name the printer, and enter in the IP Address or hostname of the print server.
- Upload a new driver or assign an existing driver to the printer object.
- Select the printer object's Port tab.
- In the Protocol section, click LPR.
-
Enter the appropriate queue name for the printer as specified in the LPD on the print server and click Save.
Make sure that LPR Byte Counting is enabled and SNMP Status is disabled.
- Workstation deployments can now be configured on the printer object's Deploy tab.
Sync Deployments
The Sync Deployment setting in the Admin Console on Tools Settings Client: TCP/IP & Windows Shared Printer Settings helps manage deployed printers. When a deployment association isn't present, the deployed printers uninstall from the workstation. For example, if users receive IP Range printer deployments, those printers will be removed when the device leaves that IP Range. With the Keep Existing Printers option enabled, printers won't be removed if they existed on the workstation before the deployment was pushed out.
- Navigate to Tools Settings Client in the Admin Console.
- In the TCP/IP Windows Shared Printer Settings section, click Sync Deployment.
- Optional: Click Keep Existing Printers.
- Click Save.
Set Default Printer
Configure default printers on the Deploy tab, so they install and select themselves as the default printer on workstations. Default printers can still be assigned at the workstation, but adding that to the deployment removes the need for end-user action. Using the Always option will adjust the default printer back during the client check-in if it was changed.
